This article presents a general synthesis of the doctoral dissertation «La alternancia de códigos en Puerto Rico: un acercamiento sintáctico-prosódico-sociopragmático». The dissertation focuses on the multidimensional analysis of codeswitching (CS) in the oral discourse of Puerto Rican bilingual speakers. The study was conducted in two stages: Study 1 examined the syntactic and prosodic distribution of CS in oral narratives, while Study 2 explored its sociopragmatic functions in spontaneous peer conversations, in addition to investigating the syntactic and prosodic distribution of CS. From an empirical perspective, the analysis considered both linguistic and extralinguistic factors related to the placement, structure, and function of CS segments, with special attention to the alignment between syntactic and prosodic boundaries, as well as discourse planning. Methodologically, the study incorporated a semi-automatic system for segmenting intonation units, which allowed for a more precise and reproducible prosodic analysis. The results revealed that CS does not occur randomly, but follows organizational patterns linked to grammatical structures and the communicative intent of speakers. This summary aims to highlight the structural and functional complexity of CS in Spanish–English bilingual contexts in Puerto Rico.
