Pandemónium is the third installment of the New Venice Chronicle trilogy by Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. Anchored in the latter half of an imaginary 18th-century Puerto Rico, against the backdrop of colonial decline, the novel gains depth through dialogues among its protagonists. They debate God’s intentions for humanity, their well-being in the world, their failures, original purpose, and their end —encompassing the entirety and nothingness of existence.. Two profound yet not explicitly stated themes resonate throughout the narrative: 1) the significance of prophetic voice, and 2) the utopian ideal, preserving the memory of beginnings in history. Furthermore, the demystification of utopia reveals truths about ourselves, emphasizing the urgency of the present moment, whether real or imagined time bestowed upon us.
